There are words inside you that no one else can write.
A story.
A memory.
An observation.
A question.
An idea.
Maybe even a book.
But knowing you want to write and actually writing are two very different things.
You sit down to write and suddenly the inner critic has a lot to say.
Is this any good? Where is this going? Who am I to write this? I should have started years ago.
So, you stop.
You edit before you’ve even begun.
You wait for inspiration.
What if it didn’t have to be so hard?
This is where a writing circle can change things.
A writing circle gives you something wonderfully simple: a time, a place, and a community that gets you to the page.
You’ll write from prompts designed to get you past the blank page. You’ll write spontaneously, without worrying about whether the work is finished, polished, or even makes sense yet.
Because this isn’t about getting it right.
It’s about finding out what you have to say.
Then you’ll have the opportunity to share.
And instead of being critiqued or edited, you’ll hear what your writing does—what catches us, what stays with us, what makes us curious, what we want more of.
You may discover that your writing has more to say than you realized.
You might discover:
- A voice that has been waiting to be heard.
- A way into your writing that makes beginning easier.
- More freedom and less perfectionism.
- A willingness to write badly before you write brilliantly.
- Unexpected ideas, images, stories, and possibilities.
- The encouragement and connection of other women who understand the pull to write.
- More confidence in your own creative instincts.
- And, perhaps most importantly, FUN.
Maybe you’re here because…
You keep having to begin again.
You have a writing practice, but somehow the writing keeps slipping away. The circle gives you a reason to show up and makes getting to the page easier.
You have ideas—but can’t seem to get them moving.
You don’t need a plan. You don’t even need an idea. The prompts will give you a place to begin.
You’re already in the middle of a writing project.
Use the circle to step away from the project and discover something that may unexpectedly inform it.
You know you’re a writer, but you’ve lost your momentum.
Come back to the page. Reconnect with your voice. Recommit to your craft.
You’re not sure you can call yourself a writer yet.
You don’t need permission. You just need a place to begin.
This is not a critique group.
We use the Amherst Writers & Artists (AWA) workshop model, a generative approach to writing that treats every participant as a writer.
We write from prompts. We write spontaneously. We share what we’ve written.
And when we listen, we aren’t looking for what’s wrong.
We’re listening for what’s working.
What moves us.
What surprises us.
What stays with us.
What makes us curious.
It’s a very different way of experiencing your own writing – and yourself as a writer.
That kind of listening can be remarkably powerful.
You begin to hear your own writing differently.
And sometimes, you begin to hear yourself differently, too.
Join our writing circle and see what happens when you give your voice room to speak.
