Find New Possibilities in Your Writing
What if you loosened the rules and let your writing surprise you?
Inspired by Susan M. Tiberghien’s One Year to a Writing Life, along with ideas and inspiration from other writers and sources, this three-session workshop invites you to explore three distinct ways of putting words on the page.
Through conversation, examples, and playful writing exercises, you’ll experiment with form, voice, rhythm, character, and story—and perhaps discover something you didn’t know you had to say.
Session One: Poetic Prose & the Prose Poem
What happens when prose begins to sing?
In this opening session, we will explore the music of language as you play in the space between poetry and prose. Through close reading and guided exercises, you will experiment with imagery, rhythm, compression, and emotional resonance. You will learn how to distill experience into vivid, lyrical language and shape it into short prose poems or poetic vignettes. By the end, each participant will draft a piece that blends narrative with the music of poetry.
Session Two: Short Stories
This session shifts from lyric compression to imaginative storytelling. A whole world can unfold in just a few pages. Discover how to create a story that feels both intimate and complete. You will study the essential elements of short fiction—character, conflict, setting, and structure—and practice crafting scenes that move. Using Tiberghien’s step‑by‑step approach, you will develop a short piece of fiction, discovering how brevity can heighten drama and deepen emotional impact.
Session Three: Dialogue
Let your characters talk. Explore how dialogue can reveal character, create tension, move a story forward, and say what your characters may not be willing to say outright.
In the final session, we will focus on dialogue as a tool for revelation and momentum. Through targeted exercises, you will learn how to create conversations that sound natural, reveal character, and advance the story. You will revise scenes from earlier sessions, strengthening voice and sharpening interactions so your writing feels alive on the page.
Come with curiosity. Leave with fresh writing, new tools, and possibilities for where your work might go next.
